The tough decision of picking just one winner in each category will fall to our esteemed panel of judges, here’s a little more information on who will be making those choices.
Simon Walton is a director of Riley & Co Chartered Accountants and Tax Advisors. He is the longest serving team member, having joined in 1991 and oversees the Tax, Payroll and Pensions, and Administration teams.
Within our local community, Simon is treasurer for Business for Calderdale. He is the finance committee member of the Community Foundation of Calderdale. As Director and Committee member of Halifax 900 Trust, he is part of the fundraising arm for the Halifax Minster. Simon is an Associate Governor at our local Salterhebble Junior and Infant School and in addition he also lecturers regularly on all things tax.
Simon spent the early part of his career working for the Inland Revenue and still sits on the regional panel of Working Together, the consultation forum for HMRC and fellow tax professionals.
Since joining the Foundation in 2000 Steve has helped to ‘plant’ Community Foundations in the other districts of West Yorkshire. Steve assisted the Bishop of Wakefield in helping to form the Wakefield Community Foundation and in 2009/10 helped form a steering committee/board trustees in Kirklees and established the One Community Foundation Chaired by Sir John Harman.
Steve has overseen 4 local flood appeals – the most recent flood on Boxing Day 2015 he and his team raised £3.4m to support flood affected householders, charities and businesses.
Steve is a Deputy Lieutenant of West Yorkshire (2008) fully immersed in community life in Calderdale and active on many committees and bodies including Chairing the Chief Execs Forum for the voluntary sector, acting as a trustee of the Halifax 900 Trust and a committee member of Business for Calderdale.
In his spare time Steve has completed a number of endurance walks, played in charity rugby and football matches, cycled from Land’s End to John O’Groats and canoed the Caledonian Canal all to raise money for local charitable causes.
Sophie is the Development Manager for Locality helping to build the capacity of local community organisations to run social enterprises and community assets.
Working closely with local authorities and commissioners to develop an environment where community enterprises can thrive.
